A Dyslexia Treatment is Often Not Enough for a Bright Right Brain Learner with Dyslexia To Improve Reading Comprehension

A Dyslexia Treatment is Often Not Enough for a Bright Right Brain Learner with Dyslexia To Improve Reading Comprehension

A dyslexia treatment that follows the Science of Reading will help Reading Fluency but may not significantly improve reading comprehension.

The challenge is that many students with dyslexia are also a right brain kinesthetic learner, who learns best when he or she sees and experiences information.  For the right brain kinesthetic learner with dyslexia, additional strategies and interventions may be necessary to address their specific challenges.

The Science of Reading is an evidence-based approach to teaching reading that emphasizes phonics, phonemic awareness, and other foundational skills. While it is effective for improving reading fluency, it’s important to note that reading comprehension is a multifaceted skill that involves various cognitive processes beyond just decoding words.

Note, if your child does not have dyslexia but learns differently, all the other efforts discussed below to improve visual processing, executive function skills and reading comprehension may be needed.

Note, these students’ profiles often include a combination of 2, 3 or 4 of the following: the student often learns differently, has auditory or visual processing issues, and very often has more than one executive function challenge that may include attention, working memory, processing speed and …

Most students with dyslexia are also a right brain, visual or kinesthetic learner with a visual processing and/or executive function challenge.

Specific problems we see in right brain kinesthetic learners with dyslexia may include:

Problems recognizing words they have seen and not mastered.

Vocabulary instruction: Enhancing word knowledge is crucial for understanding the meaning of texts.

Sight word vocabulary — where the right brain kinesthetic learner does not have a picture for what the words mean.

Visual processing issues frequently occur in this population.

Working memory.  A dyslexia treatment and building language skills often requires students to learn and remember rules.  This can be difficult for a student with a weak memory.

Processing speed.  Many students with dyslexia process information slowly, but it can be improved.

Reading comprehension strategies: Teaching specific strategies, such as visualizing, summarization, questioning, and making connections to their own experiences, can help students with dyslexia improve their comprehension skills.  For the right brain kinesthetic learner, the student will often benefit from a hands-on and visual approach that teaches them what the word looks like and creates a visual for what the words and passages mean.

Text structure or sequence awareness: Understanding how different types of texts are structured can aid comprehension. Explicit instruction in recognizing and understanding sequences can be helpful.

Background knowledge development: Building background knowledge using pictures or videos can improve comprehension. Reading a wide range of texts on different topics and relating to their own experiences can contribute to this.

Explicit instruction in comprehension skills: Providing direct instruction in specific comprehension skills, such as identifying main ideas, drawing conclusions, and making predictions, can be beneficial.

It’s important to recognize that dyslexia is a neuro-biological condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. As such, a comprehensive and individualized approach to intervention is often necessary, taking into account the unique needs and strengths of each student with dyslexia.

To improve reading fluency and reading comprehension for students with dyslexia who are right brain kinesthetic learners, the student often needs:

  • A dyslexia treatment to improve reading fluency.
  • A more visual kinesthetic approach to word recognition, spelling and vocabulary.
  • Auditory and/or visual processing issues identified and addressed.
  • Executive function issues identified and addressed.
  • Reading comprehension strategies that utilize relevant text and that leverage the student’s ability to learn best when they see and experience information.

10 Questions on How to Improve Reading Comprehension and Reading Fluency, While Lowering Anxiety

10 Questions on How to Improve Reading Comprehension and Reading Fluency, While Lowering Anxiety

In this post pandemic era, more students are further behind in reading comprehension than one would normally suspect.  Over the last few weeks, we have gotten calls from parents in grades 1 to 9, where the parents are quite concerned.  Their child is struggling in reading and often with anxiety.  The parents have often have previously tried other interventions to improve reading comprehension and reading fluency including:

  • Traditional tutoring
  • Learning centers
  • Dyslexia treatments
  • School based interventions

Parents are being told:

  • Grade retention is a possibility in the earlier grades
  • The private school their child is at may not be right for their child or in several cases
  • The parents are not being told anything, but their child is struggling more this year and they know the problem is likely to get worse
  • By a psychologist that their child has dyslexia, learns differently and has working memory issues and needs a program that addresses the whole child

What research has told us is that:

  • Almost 90 percent of the 1st graders will be poor readers in 4th grade
  • 74 percent of the students with a reading disability (dyslexia) in 3rd grade will still have a reading disability (dyslexia) in 12th grade
  • 45 percent of the students with a learning disability in middle and high school are 3 to 4.9 years below grade level in reading comprehension and 21% are more than 5 years below grade level in reading comprehension.

If your child is struggling with reading fluency and/or reading comprehension, there is a significant chance the problems will persist and worsen.  Our goal is to help you to get to the root causes of your child’s challenges and to help you lay out a Pathway to Success for your child.

In the press and online, there is a great deal of focus on dyslexia.  Dyslexia is when a student has trouble with reading fluency — that is they do not read efficiently or effectively.  Having two kids with dyslexia and helped hundreds of students with dyslexia, we know the problem is real, but we also know that:

  • While a dyslexia diagnosis and dyslexia treatment are helpful, it often does not translate directly into better reading comprehension
  • Most students with dyslexia:
    • Have difficulty with rapidly naming letters and words
    • Learn differently — they often learn best when they see and experience information and are what we call a right brain learner
    • Have a visual processing issue
    • Have executive function issues (e.g. attention, working memory and processing speed)
    • Struggling with anxiety and/or frustration
    • Have a significant problem with reading comprehension, that is often not addressed with a dyslexia program
  • Informed, empowered and proactive parents can make the difference

Before embarking on a significant effort, we recommend considering the following ten questions:

  1. What is your child’s present level of reading fluency and does your child have dyslexia
  2. What is your child’s present level of reading comprehension
  3. What is your child’s present level of anxiety/frustration
  4. If your child was going to be very successful over the next 6 months — what 3 to 5 goals would you set?  Be sure to include a personal goal for something they love to do – -baseball, dance, horseback riding etc.
  5. Is your child a bright right brain kinesthetic learner, who learns best when he or she sees and experiences information
  6. Does your child have a visual processing issue
  7. Does your have executive function problems
  8. Is anxiety or frustration a major issue for your child
  9. What can your child’s school do to help
  10. What can you do to help your child to be all he or she can be in the next 6 months

On Monday evening November 6th at 9 pm,
we will be discussing these questions,
with a focus on how to improve reading comprehension and reading fluency, while reducing anxiety for your child

Click here to register for the webinar

Before watching this webinar, we recommend you download the two screening tools below, and answer the questions.  This are designed to answer the questions.

The answers to these two questions are really helpful in your understanding your child, your explaining to their teachers who your child is and in finding the right solution to help your child succeed.

Parenting a right brain kinesthetic learner can be incredibly frustrating because:

  • These students learn differently and struggle in school
  • May not respond to interventions that focus on their weaknesses
  • They often work twice as hard as other kids, and they still fall further behind

Conversely, parenting a right brain kinesthetic learner can be rewarding when you:

  • Capitalize on their strengths
  • Identify and address their challenges
  • Boost their self-esteem, lower their anxiety and unleash their true potential

If your child is struggling in school, you may be told:

  • Do not worry they will catch up
  • Your child is in RTI (Response to Intervention) or MTSS (Multiple Tiered Systems of Supports) and we do not evaluate a child until they have completed this process or
  • Your child just needs to work harder
  • Your child just needs to improve their reading fluency (i.e., how well they can read).  We know our students often have a reading fluency issue (dyslexia) but they often learn differently and have a visual processing, attention, working memory and/or processing speed issue that impact reading fluency, reading comprehension, math, anxiety and so much more
  • Lots of kids are behind and many are further behind than your child

As parents, we heard all these comments.  We fought hard for our kids, until we were told in 8th grade our daughter was not college material.  They said her reading comprehension was 3 years below grade level and it was best to put her on a vocational track for high school.  Their contention was that she needed to be prepared for a job that did not require a college education.

Her dad asked her “What do you want to be when you grow up?”.  Her response, “The teacher I never had”.

When the guidance counselor suggested she could be a teacher’s aide, our heads virtually exploded.

Her mother, who has a Master’s in Education, became a “Mom on a Mission” and:

  • Discovered: our daughter was a bright right brain kinesthetic learner who could do far better with a strength-based approach that taught her to improve her vocabulary and reading comprehension.
  • Developed what has become known as the 3D Learner Program ® that helped our daughter improve her comprehension 4.2 grade levels in 7 months.  Note, in 2024 our daughter will have completed 20 years as a teacher, teaching students with autism, gifted kids and the RTI Program, and will earn her Doctorate in Education
  • 3D Learner has now helped thousands of students to make dramatic gains in their reading fluency, reading comprehension, self-confidence and so much more

Now, we are embarking on a program to help parents to be Informed, Empowered and Proactive Parents who Get It Right for Their Child, Starting NOW!!!

In this blog post we will focus on the benefits of rejecting the status quo, focusing on helping your child to be all they can be, Starting NOW!!! and to work with the right partners to make it happen.

In subsequent blog posts we will focus on:

  • Identifying your child’s learning style, strengths and challenges.  Then seeing what your child’s present level of performance is for academics, anxiety and confidence level.
  • Where appropriate, setting BOLD Goals that will make the difference for your child within months
  • Getting the right help for your child, acknowledging that it is often a combination of in school and out of school partners that can make the difference.  Collaboration is the key.
  • Being tenacious.  Committed to your child’s success and being open “on the how.”

Why Reject The Status Quo and Focus on Going from Stress to Outrageous Success

For students in the early grades, the data is compelling.  Almost 90 percent of the students with a word identification in 1st grade will become poor readers in 4th grade.  Over 70 percent of the third graders with a reading disability (dyslexia), will have a reading disability (dyslexia) in 12th grade.

Even worse, students with learning problems often fall much further behind in middle and high school.  A staggering 45% fall 3 to 4.9 years below grade level in their reading comprehension and an additional 21% fall 5 or more years below grade level.

What is even worse is in 2022 and 2023, we have had students come to us without an identified reading problem who were 3 and even 4 years below grade level in their reading comprehension.  We have also seen a number of students in the earlier grades who lack the foundational skills needed to succeed.

The Good News, Students Can Often Improve Their Reading Comprehension 2, 3 and Even 4 Grade Levels within 4 to 6 Months with The Right Approach for Them

Note, students we see are very often:

  • Right brain kinesthetic learners who learn best when they see and experience information
  • Struggling with some combination of:
    • Executive function issues (e.g. attention, working memory and/poor processing speed) – over 90 percent of our clients have one or more of these challenges and often have 2 or 3
    • Visual processing issues.  This is where a student may skip words and lines when reading, have difficulty copying information, and their eyes are not working effectively as a team)
    • Dyslexia and/or learning disabilities
    • Anxiety and/or frustration challenges

If your child is a right brain kinesthetic learner, your child may do far better with an integrated, engaging and effective program that plays to their strengths and identifies and addresses their challenges

  • Are a lot smarter than present results would indicate.

When parents hear us speak or talk with us individually, they are delighted to realize that:

  • Reading fluency and reading comprehension can be significantly improved
  • Homework time and stress can be reduced
  • Anxiety and frustration can be reduced
  • Confidence and resilience can be built
  • It is possible to ignite a love for learning
  • There is a program that teaches them how to be even more effective coaches and advocates for their child
  • The Pathway to Success is in the parent’s control

If your child is struggling in school, we strongly recommend you reject the status quo now.

When you reject the status quo and focus on your child’s success, the next step is to Assess for Success.

Sample Letter to Share with a Teacher if your child is a right brain kinesthetic learner

Sample Letter to Share with a Teacher if your child is a right brain kinesthetic learner

Dear [Teacher’s Name],

I hope this note finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to provide you with some insights into my learning style and preferences as a student. I am a right brain kinesthetic learner, which means that I have unique strengths and challenges that might affect my learning experience in the classroom.

Strengths:
  • Hands-On Learning: I thrive when I can engage in hands-on activities and experiences. Interactive projects, experiments, and practical demonstrations are fantastic ways for me to grasp and retain information effectively.
  • Movement and Exploration: I learn best when I am allowed to move around and explore my environment. Incorporating movement-based activities, such as games that involve physical actions, can greatly enhance my learning experience.
  • Creativity and Imagination: My right brain dominance fuels my creativity and imagination. Encouraging artistic endeavors, storytelling, and imaginative tasks will enable me to express myself and understand concepts more deeply.
Challenges:
  • Attention Span: I might struggle with sitting still for extended periods. It could be helpful to incorporate short breaks or movement-based transitions to help me refocus and maintain my attention.
  • Sequential Processing: I might find it challenging to follow strict step-by-step instructions. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable parts and using visual aids can assist me in understanding and completing assignments. I’m a “big picture” learner. I need to have an idea of what the end product looks like. Modeling lessons really helps.
  • Verbal Instructions: I may not fully grasp concepts if they are solely explained verbally. Providing visual aids, diagrams, or practical examples can greatly enhance my understanding of complex ideas. If I tell you “I don’t understand“ something, please rephrase it so I get a better picture in my head. Remember- it takes me a little more time to process information because I have to “download a picture” to understand what I need to do.
  • Organization: Keeping track of materials and assignments might be difficult for me. Providing clear organizational tools, such as visual schedules or color-coded instructions, can help me stay on track. Having my own visual schedule will help. Helping me with my planner would be appreciated. Sometimes just writing/copying what the assignments are is stressful. I can do the work, but writing all the assignments can be difficult. We can work on that together this year.

I am excited about the upcoming school year and eager to learn in a way that suits my unique learning style. By incorporating a variety of kinesthetic and creative teaching strategies, I believe we can make the learning process engaging and enjoyable for me.

Thank you for taking the time to understand my learning style better. I’m looking forward to a productive and successful year in your classroom.

Sincerely,
