5 Keys to Improve Executive Function Skills

3D Learner recognizes it is important to understand and improve executive function skills, where needed.

At 3D Learner, we have worked with thousands of smart, struggling kids and their families. Here are five key insights every parent needs to improve executive function skills.

1. Understanding Executive Function Skills in School-Age Kids

Executive function skills include:

  • Working memory – holding information in mind while using it.
  • Processing speed – how quickly one processes information
  • Flexible thinking – adapting to new situations and seeing multiple solutions.
  • Self-control – managing impulses, attention, and emotions.
  • Planning and organizing – breaking tasks into steps and following through.

When these skills are strong, children can thrive academically and socially.
When they are weak, even bright, motivated kids may struggle with reading, writing, math, and managing schoolwork.

2. How Executive Function Issues Are Identified

Traditionally, executive function issues are diagnosed through psychological or neuropsychological testing.
While these evaluations can be helpful, they often don’t go deep enough into identifying specific executive function strengths and challenges.

We use the Mindprint Assessment ®, developed by the University of Pennsylvania, because it provides a comprehensive, detailed profile of your child’s executive function skills — highlighting both strengths and weaknesses.

This allows us to design a personalized plan to help your child improve executive function skills faster and more effectively.

3. Right-Brain Learners Often Have Unique Executive Function Profiles

Right-brain learners, visual-spatial learners, and kinesthetic learners often display a mixed profile:

  • They may hyper-focus on activities they love but struggle with boring or repetitive tasks.
  • They often have excellent visual memory but weaker verbal memory.
  • Many face challenges with processing speed, flexible thinking, and organization.

Post-pandemic data shows these challenges are growing.
In a study of over 35,000 students, Mindprint found that post pandemic executive function skills declined significantly — especially working memory and flexible thinking, which are critical for success in school.

Note, we often see very smart and even gifted students with IQs in the 90th, 95th and 99th percentile, excluding executive function skills, who have working memory or processing skills in the 15th to 20th percentile.

When these skill deficits are identified and addressed, these students do far better in school and in life.

4. Why Accommodations Help — But Don’t Solve the Problem

Accommodations such as extra time, reduced homework, or assistive technology can reduce frustration and help a child succeed in the short term.

However, they don’t fix the underlying skills.
Without intervention, the same struggles often reappear year after year — and can grow worse as school demands increase.

5. Programs That Actually Improve Executive Function Skills

The good news: one can improve executive function skills with the right training.
