The Power of Connection, Self-Regulation and Teaching to Strengths
A Parent Workshop—especially for parents of smart and gifted visual-spatial learners
Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at 8 pm ESDT· Online
Does this sound like your child?
- “I know I’m smart, but I don’t feel successful.” School assignments and tests may give your child few opportunities to show their strengths.
- They hold it together at school, then unravel at home. Homework or another difficult task can become the final straw after a demanding day.
- Their results fall short of their potential. They understand more when they see an example or experience a concept, but struggle when instruction relies heavily on spoken or written explanations.
If these situations feel familiar, this workshop can help you explore what your child needs—and where to begin
During the workshop, we will discuss three ways to open the door to learning:
Through Connection — Regulation and Strength-based Teaching
The Power of Connection, Self-Regulation and Teaching to Strengths
Connect: Help your child feel understood.

Connection is important for all children and especially for the visual-spatial learner, a child who often understands information more readily through pictures, patterns, demonstrations and hands-on experiences. We’ll introduce a screening tool that can help you recognize these characteristics and start a more useful conversation about your child’s needs.
The screening tool offers insight; it does not diagnose a learning disability or replace a professional evaluation.
Here is a link for a no cost screening tool that will help you answer the question,
Is my child a visual-spatial learner?
Support self-regulation: Start with your own response.
When your child becomes overwhelmed, your response matters. Explore how modeling calm, noticing early signs of stress and adjusting how you communicate can help your child regain enough calm to take the next step.
Teach to strengths: Make learning easier to engage with.
Explore ways to turn an explanation into a picture, a difficult task into manageable steps, or an abstract concept into a hands-on experience. Using strengths can help your child engage while you continue addressing the skills they need to develop.

You’ll leave with:
- A screening tool to explore your child’s visual-spatial characteristics.
- A clearer understanding of situations that trigger frustration.
- Practical strategies to try during homework.
- A starting point for helping your child feel more connected, capable and successful.
We bring Over 40 years of parenting experience and 29 years of experience working with these smart and gifted visual-spatial learners
Mira Halpert, MEd and Mark Halpert have been helping smart and gifted kids who learn differently since 1997 — mostly from their South Florida location and now from Durham, NC. The kids they help are often visual-spatial learners, who learn best when they see and experience information. They often, but not always have a combination of dyslexia, executive function issues, auditory and/or visual processing issues and anxiety challenges.
Your child may have wonderful ideas, a vivid imagination and an impressive ability to solve problems. Yet schoolwork, homework and tests can leave them frustrated—and leave you wondering why learning feels so difficult.
When you understand how your child learns and what overwhelms them, you can respond differently.
