5 Reasons We Recommend Transformational Strength-Based Parenting at 3D Learner

At 3D Learner, we work with parents of smart, struggling—even gifted—children who know their child is capable of far more than current results show.

We recommend Transformational Strength-Based Parenting because traditional approaches—while well-intentioned—too often fall short.  We recommend transformational strength-based parenting for elementary school success — because it is best to address the problems early on.  Note, it is never too late.

With the right approach, your child may be able to improve their reading comprehension by two, three or four grade levels in 4 to 6 months, improve their self-esteem and confidence and change their lives.

Here’s why we recommend transformational strength-based parenting.

1. Most Smart, Struggling Kids Learn Differently

Many capable children don’t struggle because they aren’t smart—but because they aren’t taught the way they learn best.

Even when parents do everything right—seeking diagnoses, securing school services, pursuing tutoring—the problems often persist or worsen over time.

We know this firsthand.
This is exactly what happened in our own family before discovering a different approach.

2. Reading Gaps Quietly Widen by Upper Elementary

By fifth grade, many smart, struggling students are 1–2 years behind in reading comprehension—not because they lack ability, but because instruction isn’t aligned with how they process information.

Note, many really smart and gifted learners get stuck reading at grade level, when they should be at the 95th to 99th percentile — based on their intelligence.

For visual-spatial learners, right-brain learners, or kinesthetic learners, traditional methods often miss the mark—leading to stalled progress despite years of effort.

3. The Consequences Multiply in Middle and High School

When learning differences aren’t addressed early and holistically, gaps grow dramatically:

  • 45% of students in special education fall 3–4.9 years below grade level in reading comprehension
  • 21% fall 5 or more years behind

At this stage, academic struggles are often compounded by anxiety, low confidence, avoidance, and disengagement—making recovery far harder.

4. Transformational Strength-Based Parenting Changes the Trajectory

Transformational strength-based parenting rests on three powerful principles:

  1. Identify and leverage your child’s strengths to increase engagement, motivation and to improve results.
  2. Accurately identify and address challenges that are holding progress back
  3. Take control of your child’s success, Set transformational goals, not incremental ones and find the right partner to work with.

When parents shift from “managing problems” to pursuing transformational gains, extraordinary progress becomes possible.

Consider these real outcomes:

  • A 2nd grader reading at a kindergarten level after two years of intensive dyslexia programs
    • Gained 2 years in reading comprehension in 4 months
    • Gained 3 years in 7 months
  • A 3rd grader whose parents were told to find another private school
    • Gained 3 years in reading comprehension in one year
    • Made more progress than any student his teacher had seen in 27 years
  • A gifted 4th grader told he likely wouldn’t succeed at a top private school
    • His mother asked a critical question:
“You mentioned my son’s visual-spatial strengths—do you know anyone who teaches to them?”
    • She was referred to 3D Learner

He was accepted, became valedictorian, and later graduated from Harvard

As his mother said:

“You changed my son’s attitude—and that was 90% of the battle.”

5. Success Starts with Refusing the Status Quo

Finding the right transformational strength-based program often begins when parents decide:

  • “What we’re doing isn’t enough.”
  • “My child is capable of more.”
  • “Incremental progress is not our goal.”

Transformational success requires:

  • High expectations
  • Clear understanding of strengths and challenges
  • The right program and teachers for your child

  • And support for you, because a child’s success is deeply tied to becoming a confident, informed, transformational strength-based parent
