Florida Standards Assessments and Students with Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities
The move to the new Florida State Standards has been especially difficult for students with dyslexia and learning disabilities.
We have seen dyslexic students go from 2 years behind to 4 years behind in their reading comprehension because the reading standards are two years harder.
Math has gone from arithmetic to math word problems on steroids — with one physician saying, “I can no longer help my first grader with his math homework”.
It gets even worse when an engineer says, “I am not sure what the science question is really asking”.
The new Florida Standards have hit students, parents and teachers hard, but the worst is still to come
The new Florida Standards are likely to result in passing rates dropping from 58% to 35% for all students on the Florida Standards Assessments. For students with dyslexia and learning disabilities, we expect the passing rate to drop from 11% to 4 to 6%.
This has already happened in New York and Utah — the first two states to introduce the new and much more rigorous standards.
What can a parent do:
1- Make 2015 the year your child dramatically improves his or her reading comprehension — reading comprehension is now the key in language arts, math, science and social studies
2- Understand your child’s present situation”
– Find out what your child’s present level of reading comprehension is — the results may shock you, but better to know sooner rather than later
– Find out how your child learns best — most students with dyslexia and learning disabilities are right-brain learners who learn best when he or she sees and experiences information.
– Find out if your child has an attention, working memory, eye-teaming or related challenge — most students with dyslexia and learning disabilities have more than one additional challenge
3- Choose to set BOLD Goals
Reading comprehension is often the key. Do not just write a goal to get back to grade level — write it with powerful emotion and have your child write it from his or her perspective
I feel terrific that my reading comprehension is at the 5th grade level by the beginning of 5th grade
Then write 5 sub-goals — for both your child and you
We feel great reading 30 minutes a night for at least 30 minutes
I feel fantastic reading at the 4th grade level by April 30th — -a good benchmark goal on the way
From your perspective
We feel great having the right professional and program by February 15th
We feel terrific doing the required follow-up to achieve the reading goal
4- Collaborate with your child’s teacher and school
5- Execute like you mean it and when you doing something great — say “that is just like me”, even if it is the first time you have done it. When you do something inconsistent with the goals, say “that is not like me, the next time and will … and follow up
6- Stay the course — times will get tough, there may be nights you feel like not reading, make it happen as if it really matters — which it will
7- Celebrate successes
