Common Core Cure Improve Reading Comprehension — could it be that simple. No, but improving reading comprehension and critical thinking skills would go a long way.
The Common Core Standards, or the renamed Florida State Standards, are about two years more difficult in reading comprehension than the old standard.
Rather than raise the passing rate over time, the first states to give the Common Core Assessments have significantly raised the passing scores. As a results passing rates have dropped from 65 to 78% to 31 to 41%.
We expect that passing rates for the kind of kids we see to drop into the teens, with most of the 3rd graders being at risk for Third Grade Retention.
What we are seeing is many 3rd graders reading comprehension being 2 to 3 years below grade level and most students in higher grades being 2 to 5 years below grade level.
What is the solution for your child. Some people will opt for opting out, trying to get their child out of taking the test, some using tutors and some taking their child to a learning center.
The challenge is that most smart struggling students learn differently and have a combination of eye-teaming, attention and anxiety challenges.
While Common Core Standards are not disease, we label improving Reading Comprehension and Critical Thinking Skills as the Common Core Cure, because once your child brings his or her reading comprehension and critical thinking skills to grade level, succeeding is much more likely.
How do you do that.
1- You determine what your child’s present level of reading comprehension on passages equal in length to what your child will be tested on — far different than most schools or psychologists do
2- You assess for how your child learns best
3- You assess for where your child is strong and where your child struggles
4- You assess for eye-teaming, attention, anxiety, working memory and processing speed issues
5- You set goals for your child within a specific time frame
6- You find a professional or professionals to help your child succeed
7- You stay committed to your goals and open on the how, recognizing that execution is critical
When we met with a group of parents, one parent asked if we could provide a low or no cost way to start the process. We have done just that. To put your child on his or her pathway to success go to www.3dlearner.com
