Success in Months Not Years for Your Bright Right-Brain Learner

December 20, 2015 by Mira and Mark Halpert

Right-Brain Learners Often Struggle with Traditional Methods

This is an interesting article on Why Right-Brain Learners Struggle.

A couple of paragraphs from  a committed mom with two right-brain learners captures a couple of key points – right-brain learners learn differently and struggle with a part to whole approach

“So in a nutshell, many right-brained kids are struggling because they are being taught in ways that actually go counter to how they learn,                                                                                                       their natural development. You would too, wouldn’t you?

The problem is not with the child, but with the approach. Learning more about how right-brained kids naturally learn and when                                                                                                                         they are developmentally ready can make a huge difference in reducing the struggles for our right-brained kids.”

Our daughter struggled with reading comprehension through 10th grade, till we realized she could do far better with a strength-based program that leveraged her strengths.  The purpose of this article is to discuss

How Your Bright Right-Brain Learner Can Achieve Success in Months Not Years

Matthew and Sarah were confused.  They had invested in one expensive psycho-educational report that had assesses their daughter with a 122 IQ, well above average, and diagnosed their daughter with dyslexia and ADHD.  The school had denied the diagnosis of dyslexia.  (The former Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan has since issued a letter saying it was OK to use the word dyslexia).  The school tested their daughter for a learning disabilities and that diagnosis was confirmed.  Over the next two years, their daughter had a double dose of reading help at school, but things were not right.  They took her to a dyslexia specialist who said, “The door is closing on your child and the only way to address the reading issue was with a phonics-based approach.”

Over the next few months they tried that approach and their daughter’s reading improved — that is how well their daughter read out loud.  The difficulty was

Reading Comprehension and Their Daughter Did Not Like to Read

Discovering Their Daughter was a Bright Right-Brain Learner – Mom Loved That Feeling — “That’s my kid!!!”

Mom read an article about a right-brain learner and then saw these questions:

–  Does your child remember places visited, even from years ago?

–  Does your child learn best when she sees and experiences information?

–  Are your child’s reading comprehension and test scores well below her potential?

“that’s my kid”

The next three questions also hit home:

–  Does homework take too long with stress increasing every year?

–  Does your child lose focus when bored?

–  Does your child skip words and lines when reading?

Mom recognized her daughter learned differently for the first time, she knew her daughter had an attention issue, but the visual perception issue was one that had never come up.

Mom had gone to our 3D Learner Dyslexia page.

First she downloaded a no cost copy of  “Life is a Ball Do Not Put Me in a Box” and boy did she relate.  Not only did the light-hearted book describe her daughter, but it captured her challenges too.  For the first time she got it<

Being a Bright Right-Brain Learner is cool

The next step was to do the assessment with her daughter.  It confirmed the learning difference and the attention issue.  It confirmed a vision issue — that was probably correctable.  After doing the vision assessment with her daughter, mom asked, “Why didn’t you tell me about the issue and her daughter said, “It is the only way I have ever seen and did not realize that other kids did not have the same problem”

Mom and Dad then called us for a Success in Months Not Years Strategy Session.  By this time they realized their child was a bright right-brain learner with an attention and visual perception issue. What they were surprised to learn was how many bright right-brain learners have achieved success in months not years.

Today their child is a very successful right-brain learner who:

–  Improved her reading comprehension 3 grade levels in 4 months

–  Went from below grade level to above grade level on the standardized tests

–  Got into the same reading group as her friends

–  Was able to reduce homework time by over an hour a day

–  Felt really good about who she was
