Our education system IS creating SLOW PROCESSING speed in our kids! I’ve been teaching students for over 40 years. I’ve seen education practices come and go more often than I want to admit. We seem to have gone DATA CRAZY in the name of helping children learn to read— and quite honestly, I’ve HAD IT!!!
TOO MANY KIDS ARE NOT LIKING TO READ and therefore are Not reading. Struggling readers are made to repeat exercises and read out loud making it a difficult and frustrating process.
AND we are seeing many more kids with SLOW PROCESSING SPEED. It’s no wonder they don’t want to read.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?????
We are spending so much time trying to figure out what is WRONG with our kids – that we are not focusing on what is RIGHT and what ACTIONS and ACTIVITIES we should be doing with ALL of them that will have huge benefits for positive learning, and less emotional stress.
We are changing our educational model to match the medical model; assuming that all children learn the same way. Don’t get me wrong, data is a good thing, but spending so much time creating tests to get information that doesn’t have anything to do with creativity, or individualism, or real life is just that – data!!!
There is so much talk about kids being pressured to succeed in school and thousands of studies to prove what works and what doesn’t, using MRIs to show how brains change. I fear we are losing the whole point of childhood.
Kids learn by doing. The best things we as parents can do for our kids is :
EXPERIENCES… SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT…
EXPERIENCES… POSITIVE SELF WORTH AND MOVEMENT
Take a step back and look at the BIG PICTURE of your child’s life. What experiences are filling their days? What are the words they are hearing? How are we reading to our kids? Are we helping them engage in the meanings of words- not just the sounds! What can you do today to ensure positive learning experiences?
The effects of slow processing speed for students can lead to a number of problems– Anxiety and NOT READING leading the list!
The very kids that are having difficulty learning the mechanics of reading are often our most creative kids! Words make pictures in their heads! For them it is vital those pictures MAKE SENSE. Learning rules about what sounds various letter patterns make, is not something they often relate to…unless THEY SEE the visual patterns of letters. “Downloading” these images can take time- if rushed, confusion and anxiety can run rampant! If this constant repetition continues, our students just give up or blow up!
We need to stop this CHAOS and help these creative kids succeed!
Too many different processing skills must be mastered for reading to be an easy activity. It is often not just one issue. As a parent and an experienced educator, I have been where most of you parents have been. It is not a pleasant place– even less pleasant for your child– who only wants to please-and be successful and happy!!
