Reading efficiently is critical when reading silently. An efficient reader can read for longer periods of time with good comprehension because they are not expending a lot of energy sound out words. The mechanics of reading is easy for them. They can use their mental pictures for understanding what they are reading.
When silent reading is inefficient, students are stressed and usually avoid reading whenever they can. This produces a vicious cycle, students don’t like to read, they don’t read and they fall behind.
Vocabulary and comprehension suffer and they never are able to put all their understanding of ideas together to understand what they read.
The READING PLUS® Program combines a unique process of building a student’s visual perception, word recognition as well as vocabulary skills. These skills builds a student’s capacity for increasing their reading comprehension while building stamina to read longer passages.
There are three parts to the Reading Plus program:
- Eye Balance works on visual scanning and visual response time
- Vocabulary building
- Sustain silent reading
A student works on each of these areas from 3-5 times a week for increased efficiency and comprehension
