Dyslexia Does Not Solve Reading Comprehension Problem
The image that resonates with us is shown below:
Very often we hear that the problem is dyslexia, or ADHD, or Central Processing Disorder or Eye-tracking. Dyslexia is a very hot subject. When one looks at the International Dyslexia Association definition of dyslexia one finds
“Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.
Why Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities Help and Hurt
Labels like dyslexia and learning disabilities are very helpful in getting services from public or charter schools. They may be necessary for entry into private school specialty programs.
What is missing from this conversation:
- Even the students with dyslexia are often visual learners with dyslexia. If a child learns best when material is presented visually or experientally, he may benefit from a program that plays to his strengths.
- Virtually every child we see has some combination of attention, working memory, processing speed, eye-teaming and/or anxiety challenges
- Reading comprehension is often not considered in the discussion or treated as a secondary concern. When we shift the focus to reading comprehension and create positive experiences for reading, parents often see the potential to make a huge difference
This is what we will be discussing at our Webinars on August 27th and 28th. Sign-up above to receive information on how to access the webinar.
