The Game Changing Parent Success Plan
For Success by Third Grade for Your Child
Research shows that elementary school retention does not benefit most children – while third grade retention is often the focus of the grade retention debate, this study shows even kindergarten retention has a negative effect.
In 2015, we have seen schools move away from retention – promoting to 1st grade students who were at Pre-K reading levels and promoting to third grade students who are reading at the beginning of 1st grade level. School are in a bind, because in 2014-15, the State of Florida and other states dramatically increased the standards. In many cases the schools chose the more cautious approach to grade retention but …
This more cautious approach to retention shifts the burden to the parents
With the new Florida State Standards or Common Core Standards, parents are facing three challenges:
1- In 2015, schools tended to promote students who were not prepared for the next grade
2- In 2016, there is a high likely that many more students will be retained in third grade, because the percentage of students scoring at Level 1 on the 3rd grade reading test is likely to rise to 25% to 30%
3- The schools often do not have the tools or the programs to help your child succeed – and we recommend that you take control and develop a Parent Success Plan for your child
We faced this challenge with our 8th grader was told she was not college material. The challenges included:
1- We knew she was behind but we were not aware she was 3 years below grade level
2- We did not realize that she learned differently
3- We did not realize the school had basically thrown in the towel and did not have any way to get her back to grade level
4- We did not realize that with a hands-on approach that played to her strengths, she could get back to grade level in months not years
5- We did not realize as parents it was up to us to make the difference, until the school told us the truth – they did not know how to help our daughter to get back to grade level
We did take charge, her mom developed what has become known as the 3D Learner Program, ®, and our daughter did improve her reading comprehension 4.2 grade levels in 7 months.
Our second student was our 3rd grade son. With the 3D Learner Program ®, he was able to improve from the 31st percentile in reading, to the 54th percentile within months and to the 74th percentile by the following year.
We know you can help at any age, but it is far better to have your child achieve Success by Third Grade.
We have since helped over 2000 students and we realize several things:
1- With the right professional help, parents can make the difference
2- It is critical to know if your child learns differently.
3- It is equally important to know if your child has an attention, eye-teaming, phonics or related issue.
4- If you have a smart struggling child, he or she can do far better wit the right help
5- You want to start by understanding if your child learns differently and has an attention, eye-teaming or related issue
For a child who learns differently and has attention, eye-teaming or related issues, school may not have the best answer – nor do most tutors or learning centers
The best way to start is with a Parent Success Plan that provides you with:
a. An accurate assessment of your child’s reading comprehension level
b. An assessment of how your child learns best
c. A process to screen for attention and eye-teaming issues
d. A process to set BOLD Goals consistent with what is possible with a combination of in and out of school efforts
e. Finding the right combination of outside programs, in-school programs, accommodations and support
