Third grade success in months not years — will require proactive parents.
Matthew’s parents were really in hole. In October, they had been told their son was below grade level, but not to worry. Now it was early January and they received a letter saying that Matthew might fail 3rd grade and be faced with Third Grade Retention. This has happened in prior years, but in 2015 more parents may be receiving such a letter.
What has happened? With the new Florida State Assessments, we expect the percentage of students scoring below grade level to increase from 42% to 60 to 65% of the students.
While Florida will limit the percent of students facing third grade retention in 2015 to the same percent who scored a Level 1 in 2014. The bigger risk for this year’s third graders can be summed up in a comment from an A.E. Casey Report”Early Warning?! Why Reading by the End of Third Grade Matters”
“Our current approach to testing and standards masks the extent of our nation’s problems with reading comprehension. Up to half of the printed fourth grade curriculum is incomprehensible to students who read below grade level.”
The challenges are several fold:
1- The new Florida State Standards are much harder than in previous years — students who might have been a year behind before are now 2 to 2.5 years below grade level
2- There is precious little time to get it right before 4th grade and even less time to get it right before the 3rd grade Reading Florida Standards Assesment
3- Schools are taking actions, but they might not be sufficient to either get your child to pass the test or to be reading at grade level by 4th grade
What can you the parent do to find out why your smart child is struggling and how you can make the difference?
1- Find out what your child’s present level of reading comprehension is on passages of the same length and complexity your child will be tested on
2- Find out if your child learns differently and whether your child skips words and lines when reading and/or has difficulty sustaining attention
3- Learn more about why your smart child might be struggling and the critical role you play as the parents
4- Find out how you can make the difference and have your child achieve Success in Months and Not Years
5- Read our book we wrote on Success by 3rd grade
