Right-Brained Solutions for Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities and Child Behavior Problems

Dyslexia is often seen as a reading problem that is not expected given a child's intelligence.

The issue is often seen as a problem with phonics -- a difficulty with the sound symbol connection.

This would seem to have nothing to do with children behavior problems, but ...

From our experience, Dyslexia is often caused by a child being a right-brained learner who learns best when seeing and experiencing information and:

Has difficulty transferring words into pictures, and often has two, three, four or even five  of the following three points:
  • Tracking issues (skipping words and lines when reading), reversals or copying challenges -- a disconnect between their mind and their eyes.
  • Difficulty paying attention to that which is boring or frustrating.
  • Anxiety or frustration when they are doing something they do not understand. The child behavior problems are often significantly reduced when the  child is taught the way he/she learns best, and challenges are addressed and they are respected.
  • Difficulty remembering multiple instructions.
  • Processing speed challenges. Like the old 56 modems that took far longer to download videos vs. text documents - they think quickly, but it takes a long time to go from words to pictures to meaning.

When you look at Dyslexia, a Learning Disability or a reading problem from a right-brained perspective, the seven questions become:

  1. Is my child a right-brained learner
  2. Does my child have a visual processing issue (which could be tracking, reversals, copying, etc.)?
  3. Does my child have an attention problem - whether or not it is ADHD?
  4. Does my child have an anxiety or frustration problem -- and what causes it?
  5. Does my child have a working memory problem? For the right-brained learner this often results in their being able to remember places visited for years, but not remembering the three things you asked them to do.
  6. Does my child have a processing speed issue?  Where it takes much longer to do tasks versus their peers.
  7. Given the resulting profile -- who can best help your child and you? My husband Mark is a recovering Screamaholic (R) and we understand the child's, your spouse's and your frustration. The best help is finding someone who works with the whole  child and helps you to be the coach and advocate your child needs.
