Parent Manifesto For Your Bright Right-Brained Learner

Do you have a smart struggling child or grandchild who:

-    Remembers places visited, even from years ago?

-    Learns best when seeing and experiencing information?

-    Is smart, but struggles with reading comprehension, math word problems and standardized tests

If this fits your child, you may have a bright right-brained learner, whose major crime is they learn differently -- and are having to adjust to being a right-brained learner in a left-brained world.

You may be told by experts that:

-    Your child needs to master phonics first, if they are ever going to read.

-    If they have an attention problem, ADHD Medication is the answer.

-    If they skip words and lines when reading, vision therapy is a hoax.

-    That if your child and you would only work harder --- all would be well

This last comment really made us see red.

We have been there -- I am Mira Halpert M.Ed, and with my husband Mark and our dedicated 3D Learner team, we have helped over 1200 students.

This generation is different. In a study of 750 kids, Dr. Linda Silverman, from the Gifted Development Center in Denver, found that 33% of the kids are what she calls visual spatial learners -- we call them right-brained learners -- because their right-brain is the stronger part of their brain and they learn best when they see and experience information.

Dr. Silverman also found that an additional 29% learn better when they see and experience information.

Right-brained math:

Clearly visual spatial or right-brained learners                    33%
Tend to be right-brained learners                                      29%
Are more right-brained learners                                        62%

If your child learns best when seeing and experiencing information, this changes:
-    How you help them to learn new information and to study

-    The programs you select for them

-    Their potential to do very well in life -- despite early reading problems -- just consider  how successful bright right-brained learners have been (e.g Einstein, Edison, Disney, Charles Schwab or Sir Richard Branson)

What has surprised us the most is:
-     How many smart struggling kids come from excellent families, go to great schools, and have benefited from massive parental support -- in time and money, and yet they still struggle.

-     We know that more and more kids learn differently -- but for some reason, schools and outside programs still focus on phonics and psychologists and doctors still focus on ADHD medication.

-     How quickly kids can improve when they are taught the way they learn best, they are engaged and respected, and you - the parents - partner with the right professionals for your child?

We have three core beliefs:

1-   You must Do What Works for your child and for you -- you need to be empowered to do it in a way that works for your child and for you.

2-   You are not alone -- there are 37 million right-brained learners in K to 12 today in the United States alone -- and they are even more likely to be from families where their parents are creative, excellent problem solvers and very successful in life.

3-   There is strength in numbers and in sharing ideas, what works and what does not work. We have created a Free Test and also have a Free Newsletter we want to share with you. Just complete the Free Quick Test and we will provide you with a Free Monthly Newsletter.

If you have a smart struggling child, we recommend you consider the following 5 steps as part of the Parent Revolution for Right-Brained Learners:

1-   Success is the only option  -- we strongly recommend you commit to your child's outrageous success and are open on the how. As you explore new programs and new approaches, you will find that much of what you have been doing is absolutely right, and if you add the right tools, your child can be even more successful.

2-   Understand your child and your role -- if your child is a right-brained learner, they are more likely than their peers or siblings to:
     -    Be more sensitive to what you say and how you say it
     -    Be more sensitive to older and younger people
     -    Be better at concrete ideas, and to struggle with abstract concepts
     -    Skip words and lines when reading, reverse numbers or letter and/or have difficulty copying off the board
     -    Hyper-focus on that which interests them, and have difficulty paying attention to that which is boring or frustrating
     -    Have problems remembering spelling words or math facts -- especially a week after the test
     -    Be able to communicate ideas verbally, but struggle with putting their thoughts on paper
     -    Be able to solve math problems in their head, but not show their work
     -    Be smart, but struggle with reading comprehension, math word problems and standardized tests
     -    Respond well to people who engage and respect them -- and to respond negatively when they believe people are giving them attitude

3-    Choose to set BOLD Goals

Think BIG

Initially we did not realize how successful our own right-brained learners and our right-brained students could be -- but we now realize that if you set a goal to improve their reading comprehension by 2 or even 3 grade levels in a year -- it can be done, with the right professional and parental support.

4-    Choose the right professionals -- for a right-brained learner -- you will want to consider professionals who:

        -    Teach the way your child learns best

        -    Respect your child and you

        -    Help you to identify and address the visual processing, attention and anxiety challenges that are often present

        -    Teach your child to master sight word vocabulary -- with a way that works – smart struggling students often struggle with the words that do not generate a picture (e.g. what, why, how, if, but, and, the etc.)

        -    Will help you to be the coach and advocate your child needs

        -    Will help you to get the help your child needs at school

5-    Execution is the key -- goals are very important and so is the follow through.  Think big, partner with the right professionals and follow through.

Our last point is that the person who has made the difference is often the mom, but more and more often, the dads and the grandparent are getting involved in the process of helping their children and grandchildren.
