A Gifted Dyslexia Treatment for The Gifted Visual-Learner with Dyslexia
Where to find a Gifted Dyslexia Treatment for a gifted child with dyslexia? Dyslexia was the diagnosis and the recommendations were for two different treatments. A more phonics-based approach and another that included visualization. The parents had already spent over $10,000 on tutors and learning centers. The student was also gifted. Mom, who had spent some time on our 3D Learner Website, asked, “is my child a visual-spatial learner and if so, is there a dyslexia treatment that teaches the way he learns best?
The mom, who had done our Success Assessment with her son, that revealed he learned differently and had both an attention and eye-teaming challenge.
Mom asked the psychologist 5 questions, does either dyslexia treatment improve my child’s:
- Sight word vocabulary — his ability to understand the frequently used words
- Ability to recognize the whole word – for words he has seen and not mastered
- Ability to track better when he reads
- Ability to focus in class, on tests and when doing homework
- Improve his self-esteem and self-advocacy skills
Now the psychologist was interested — no, neither dyslexia treatment focuses on sight word vocabulary, they both tend to focus on breaking words up and not on recognizing the whole words and neither dyslexia treatment addresses either tracking issues or attention. On building self-esteem, one of the practitioners is better than the other, and neither focuses on self-advocacy skills.
The psychologist said, “I am not sure the 3D Learner Program (R) has been scientifically proven.
The dad, who was an entrepreneur and who had pressed us on this matter shared his views. 3D Learner uses many different components that are scientifically validated, but their whole program is tailored to meet the individual student’s strengths and challenges, so it is almost impossible to have a study group and a control group. What we have done is talked with other parents who had children like ours, who were ecstatic with the results.
Dad added, “3D Learner also focuses on the smart and gifted student with dyslexia, with what they call a Gifted Dyslexia Treatment — focused more on the child’s gifts, versus an IQ>
The End Result Was a Very Successful Student and a Psychologist We Now Partner With
The student did improve his reading comprehension 3 grade levels in 4 months, his standardized test scores went from below to above grade level and his baseball improved dramatically — both his average and his power. Self-esteem and self-advocacy skills improved too — the next year the student explained to his teachers the first week how he learned and what he needed. They also developed a non-verbal cue the student could use when he was lost.
We now refer to this psychologist and he to us. Helping the smart and gifted visual-spatial learner
Our Gifted Dyslexia Treatment is far different than most. As Dr. Linda Silverman, from the Gifted Development Center in Denver, wrote about our program, “Your program is what my students often need. I recommend many of the components you use, but you are the first professionals who have so effectively integrated them with your very unique and effective learning system”.
