Schools are trying hard to help your child.
The first three things you want to do are to:
1- Understand your options -- passing the 10th grade FCAT is one way to get a diploma, achieving certain scores on the ACT or SAT is another way and a waiver is a slim possibility -- going to a private school is yet another option.
2- Talk with your child's guidance counselor -- they can share insights into where your child has been struggling, where they need help and what you can do to make the difference
3- Learn more about how serious the challenge is and what you can do about it
Our story is more typical than we thought. We have had many teenagers take our reading assessment -- only to find out that their child's reading is 3, 4 or even 5 years below grade level.
