Is labeling your child with ADHD Helpful or Hurtful?
ADHD often provokes an anti ADHD Medication response. As a parent, you want to be aware that:
- ADHD Medication is only one of the many ADHD Treatment options
- Alternative ADHD Treatments with tools like the Interactive Metronome (R) and Brain Gym (R) can really help
- Accommodations at school can really be helpful -- ADHD students or often identified as lazy and unmotivated, when they really have a problem with attention and organization. The right accommodations can really help
- How you respond to the ADHD diagnosis issue is really important?
My name is Mark Halpert. I am an adult with ADHD. We have dealt with ADHD at the personal, family and client level. We believe there are 5 keys in transforming ADHD from Stress to Success
1- Recognize that many of the most successful people in the world have ADHD
2- ADHD - The Inattentive Type is the inability to focus on that which is boring. It is the same child who can focus on a Video Game or Legos (R) for hours, who has trouble paying attention to one teacher and not another. Attention inconsistency can almost always be traced to that which is boring or frustration
3- Federal Law requires public schools to accommodate students with ADHD -- with either:
- A 504 Plan that can provides accommodations like untimed tests, copies of notes, or a quiet setting for tests
- An IEP -- if the ADHD signficantly impacts their academic performance and they would benefit from special education services -- this is what they call OHI or Other Health Impaired
4- We strongly recommend that where ADHD is suspected, parents
- Have their child assessed for ADHD
- Pursue one of four options
- ADHD Medication
- Natural solutions like the Interactive Metronome (R) and Brain Gym (R)
- Counseling
- A combination of ADHD Medication and tools like the Interactive Metronome and Brain Gym
Many parents ave found trying Alternative Treatments first, since these actions will teach your child the skills to address the attention problems. If that helps but does not solve the whole problem, consider combining the alternative treatment with ADHD Medication
5- We favor working with your child's school -- with a diagnosis you signficantly improve the chances your child's teacher will provide the right support and that your child will be protected by the law
We find that the Interactive Metronome and Brain Gym will reduce the need for ADHD medication and in a number of cases, the severity of the problem is reduced, so that a reduced dosage can be used. The combination of the Interactive Metronome (R), Brain Gym (R) and ADHD Medications may be the answer.
