Right-Brained FCAT Programs

For Right-Brained Learners

Students who struggle with the FCAT often have 3, 4 or 5 of the following challenges

1-   They learn differently.  The FCAT is designed for the logical, sequential and auditory learner -- most smart students who struggle with the FCAT are visual-experiential learners, who learn best when they see and experience information.  We call these students right-brained learners.  Right-brained learners think from whole to part, they need to be taught differently, and they can often do very well on the FCAT, with the right training.

2-   Difficulty paying attention for long periods of time.  Some may have ADHD, but most smart struggling students just have difficulty paying attention to that which is boring or frustrating -- the FCAT is boring and the FCAT experience is frustrating

3-  Test Anxiety -- normal students tense up when someone says, pass the FCAT or else.

4-  Processing speed -- most visual learners process the whole picture versus the words -- this takes longer.  On timed tests like the FCAT, the combination of test anxiety and/or processing speed challenges causes major challenges

5-  Skipping words and lines when reading -- sometimes called tracking issues

What 3D Learner does that is far different than most is:

-   We assess for learning differences, attention, anxiety, processing speed and tracking issues

-   We teach the way a right-brained learner learners.  We have a philosophy -- Right-Brained Programs for Right-Brained Students

-   We address the attention, test anxiety, processing speed and tracking issues, where appropriate

The FCAT has taken on a life of its own.  The State of Florida is determined to raise FCAT passing scores, but they continue to teach the way they have always taught.

My name is Mira Halpert.  I have a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Michigan.  I have four great kids.  Two of them excelled in school; the other two were equally bright, but they struggled with reading comprehension.

They told me my daughter was not college material and I became

A mom on a mission!!!

With what has become known as the 3D Learner Program (R) my daughter improved her reading comprehension 4.2 grade levels in 7 months.  Then I helped my 3rd grade son to go from the 31st to the 74th percentile and realized how much stress and strain I reduced by getting to the root cause of the problem earlier.

Then the FCAT became the rage, and I needed to find a sane way to have an FCAT Program that taught the students the skills they needed to excel in life, and oh by the way, made passing the FCAT relatively easy.

Both Jimmy and Mary were classic cases of right-brained learners.  Jimmy was a 3rd grader and Mary a tenth grader.

Jimmy had been to a nationally known learning center and Mary to a series of psychologists, phonics-based programs and tutors.

Their parents read these 3 questions:

-   Does your child remember places visited, even from years ago?

-   Does your child remember details from movies, even if they missed the plot?

-   Does your child learn best when they see and experience information?

That was both Jimmy and Mary.  What was startling was how they both faced similar but slightly differently challenges.  Jimmy struggled with:

-  The small words -- what, why, except, but, etc.

-  Not recognizing words he had previously "learned"

-  Struggling with concepts like "the best answer", "compare and contrast", etc.

Mary struggled with reading comprehension, math word problems and the way questions were worded.

The next 3 questions were equally enlightening:

-  Does your child skip words and lines when reading?

-  Does your child lose focus?

-  Does your child get stressed when taking tests?

Jimmy struggled with all three, while Mary struggled with attention and anxiety.  As it turns out

-   1/4 of our students are right-brained learners with an attention issue

-   1/4 of our students are right-brained learners with a tracking issue

-   1/2 of our students are right-brained learners with both an attention and a tracking issue

What Differentiates 3D Learner

-   Capitalizing on how our students learn best

-   Identifying and addressing his tracking, attention and anxiety challenges, where appropriate

-   Partnering with his parents and teachers

We realize that a 1-on-1 program is best for students, but we also realize economic realities.  For the 2012 FCAT we are offering:

-  1-on-1 training

-  Semi-private training

-  Workshops where the demand warrants it
