With what has become known as the 3D Learner Program (R) my daughter improved her reading comprehension 4.2 grade levels in 7 months. Then I helped my 3rd grade son to go from the 31st to the 74th percentile and realized how much stress and strain I reduced by getting to the root cause of the problem earlier.
Over the last 10 years we have helped hundreds of students to go from FCAT Stress to Outrageous Success. We have developed the following 5-step program.
1- Decide that stress is unacceptable and you want your child to be Outrageously Successful. Just passing the FCAT often comes with a high price -- remedial reading, being put in classes with other FCAT challenged students, and not being able to take the electives your child and you want. As I did with my son, you want your child to be very successful and to never have to worry about the FCAT ever again
2- Assess for Outrageous Success. Parents often try and get accommodations for their child -- extra time, a quiet room, or the non-reading portions of the FCAT read to their child. These make sense, but there are 5 things you want to assess for if your goal is to go from FCAT Stress to Outrageous Success
-
Does your child learn best when they see and experience information. Many smart kids struggle with reading comprehension and FCAT like tests, because they learn differently and get confused by wordy tests
-
Does your child skip words and lines when reading. Over 70% of the students who learn differently who visit our office skip words and lines when reading
-
Does your child lose focus when taking long tests. Attention challenges make long tests like the FCAT harder than they should be
-
Does your child struggle with test anxiety. Test anxiety is the norm, when a child hears, "You will be retained if you do not pass ....
-
Does your child have dififculty completing timed tests. Hands-on learners tend to think in pictures and they often cannot complete or are rushed completing timed exames
Your child has 3, 4 or 5 of these challenges. If this is true, can you imagine how powerful it is to be aware of these gifts and challenges -- that would be assessing for success
3- Choose to set BOLD Goals. If 1 is failing, 2 is passing but still below grade level, 3 is grade level performance and 4 is above grade level, we often suggest a goal of achieving a 3 and preferably a 4 to reflect grade level or above grade level performance. Many of our students set this goal and achieve a 3 or a 4. As one dad said whose son went from expecting a 1 to a 4
"The results from your program were spectacular"
4- The 4th critical step is to select professionals who:
-
Can guide you through a more formal assessment
-
Teach the way your child learns best
-
Can identify & address you child's challenges
-
Can provide the training and support your child needs
-
Can help to get the accommodations your child needs
-
Can help you to be the coach and advocate your child needs
-
Can help you to set-up the structure and action plans you need and to deal with issues on the way
5- The 5th and most crucial step is to do it Be committed to the goal of your child being outrageously successful, flexible on how you get there and make it happen
